Today, we honor and remember Philadelphia Police Officer Ronald Trumbette, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on May 23, 1975. Officer Trumbette was tragically shot and killed while courageously responding to a silent alarm at a warehouse operated by the New York Extract Company located at 914 South Fifth Street in Philadelphia.
As Officer Trumbette entered the building to protect the community he faithfully served, a suspect hiding in the rafters above launched a violent attack. During the struggle, the suspect gained control of Officer Trumbette’s weapon and fatally shot him. Another responding officer critically wounded the suspect during the exchange. The 26-year-old suspect, who had a lengthy criminal history largely involving burglaries, was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in August 1976. That sentence was eventually commuted to life imprisonment.
Officer Ronald Trumbette served honorably with the Philadelphia Police Department for five years, dedicating his life to protecting others with courage, integrity, and commitment. His bravery and selfless service remain a lasting example of the sacrifices law enforcement officers make each day in service to their communities.
Today, we remember not only the tragedy of his loss but also the legacy he left behind. Officer Trumbette was more than a police officer — he was a husband, a father, a son, a colleague, and a friend. He was survived by his wife, son, and parents, whose lives were forever changed by his untimely passing.
