Authorities in Georgetown County, South Carolina are investigating a fatal boating accident that occurred on the Sampit River near the Campbell Boat Landing area in Maryville, resulting in the death of Wendell “Jay” Holbert III, 49, of Conway.
According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), two boats collided on Saturday morning under circumstances that remain under active investigation. Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after the incident was reported, and despite rapid response efforts, Holbert sustained fatal injuries at the scene. The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity.
