Sgt. Anthony Augustus Gilleland, Jr Rome, GA Death, Obituary: Cherished Community Member Sadly Passed Away

Family members, friends, fellow law enforcement officers, and the Rome and Trion, Georgia communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Sgt. Anthony Augustus Gilleland, Jr., who passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the age of 59. His passing has left a profound sense of sorrow among all who knew him, while countless tributes continue honoring the life of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, officer, and friend.

Born in Rome, Georgia, on August 19, 1966, Anthony was the son of the late Anthony A. Gilleland, Sr. and Linda Brown Proctor. Throughout his life, he became widely respected for his dedication to both his family and his service to the community. As a Sergeant with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Anthony built a reputation for leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to protecting and serving others. His fellow officers remember him not only as a trusted colleague but also as a loyal friend and mentor whose presence made a lasting impact within the department.

Outside of his career in law enforcement, Anthony was known for the deep love he had for his family. He cherished every moment spent with his wife of 32 years, Carrie Gilleland, along with their children, grandchildren, and extended family. Those closest to him describe him as a man whose strength, humor, kindness, and steady support brought comfort and joy to everyone around him.

Anthony also carried a passion for Alabama football and proudly embraced his role as a devoted fan, often sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends through his familiar “Roll Tide” spirit. His faith, values, and love for those around him defined the way he lived his life each day.

In addition to his parents, Anthony was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Proctor; sister, Carrie Colbert; brother, Stacy Colbert; mother-in-law, Ann Devine; and great-grandson, Everett Carmody.

As loved ones gather to celebrate and remember his life, they continue finding strength in the memories he created and the example he set through service, love, and compassion. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched both personally and professionally.
